Deadline: April 15, 2020
This scholarship is being established as a way to recognize Jeremiah Murphy, who was extremely committed to Catholic education. As a graduate of Cathedral High School, he was inducted into the O'Gorman Cathedral Alumni Hall of Fame and was presented the Woody Drey Everyday Hero Award for his humble service to the O'Gorman Community.
In O'Gorman's early years, private school students were barred from competing in SDHSAA events including speech, drama, band, choral and athletic events. Jeremiah lobbied to change the law to mandate the inclusion of parochial schools in SDHSAA events and took the case all the way to the South Dakota Supreme Court. It was a tough battle, but because of his efforts, O'Gorman is now able to compete with the top public schools from around the state. It is because of his efforts that O'Gorman can claim their multitude of state championships in all activities.
In addition to his incredible support of O'Gorman High School, he worked tirelessly for the Sioux Falls Diocese and for that work, he was installed as a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope John Paul II, the highest honor a lay person can receive from the church for his service to the church and good example set in his community.
The recipient of the Jeremiah Murphy Scholarship will receive an award certificate in May as well as a tuition credit for the following fall semester at O'Gorman High School. The recipient will be determined by the scholarship selection committee.
The Jeremiah Murphy Scholarship is a special scholarship that recognizes a high school student that is involved in activities, maintains a 3.5 GPA or higher, and has financial need.
The Jeremiah Murphy Scholarship application form will be made available each year during enrollment on the Bishop O'Gorman Catholic School website. Please complete the application form and a 150 word essay on how you feel your high school education is enhanced by being involved in activities. The scholarship deadline is April 15, 2020. The TADS application should be completed to be eligible for this scholarship.
